HVUT is the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax assessed annually for operating the heavy vehicles on public highways at registered gross weights equal to 55,000 pounds or more.
The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), a leader in transportation-related research and part of the American Trucking Associations (ATA),published the following report on how the trucking industry relates to Missouri’s economy:
In the year 2011, Missouri's trucking industry provided 140,080 jobs or one among 15 in the state. Missouri's Total trucking industry wages paid in 2011 exceeded $5.9 billion, with an average annual trucking industry salary of $42,013. In May 2011, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the United States reported that truck drivers, heavy, tractor-trailer and light delivery drivers, held 51,780 jobs with a base annual salary of $35,350.
In the year 2012, Missouri had over 10,110 small, locally owned trucking companies which are served by a wide range of both large and small supporting businesses.
Over 72% of Missouri communities move their goods exclusively on trucks. Trucks transported 81% of state's total manufactured tonnage in 2010 or 479,499 tons per day.
In the year 2009, Missouri's trucking industry paid approximately $729 million in federal and state roadway taxes. The industry paid 39% of all taxes owed by Missouri motorists, despite trucks represented only 15% of state's vehicle miles traveled.
In January 2013, a typical five-axle tractor-semitrailer combination paid $7,811 in state highway use taxes in addition to $8,906 in federal use taxes. These taxes were over and above the typical taxes paid by Missouri businesses.
In 2008, Missouri had 129,718 miles of public roads over which 68 billion miles are traveled by the motorists and 9.9 billion miles traveled by the truckers.
